2-on-1 Basketball

Don’t you hate it when you have three people and you don’t want to resort to the repetitive game of HORSE? Here is how you play a proper 2-on-1 game of basketball
Two people are always on offense.
  • When the offense scores, both players score a point and the scorer switches with the defender.
  • When the defender gains possession of the ball, he/she scores a point; ball goes back to the offense at the top of the arc.
  • Play until a preset score limit, win by two.

Simple isn’t it? If the players are good, the game might lean towards offense too much, at which point, you could raise the points given to the defense. I’m not very good, so when we play, this works out pretty well.

I used to play a similar version of that game but instead of having two people on offense, which makes it very easy to score and hard to defend against, we used to play it with one guy on offense and the other two on defense with the ball returning to the offense if the guy scored. That way is more difficult to score and, at least in my experience, a more balanced game. My coach used to tell me that the offensive player always has the advantage over the defender in a one on one situation, that's why the defense is a team concept whereas athe offense can be played individually. I think he's right since usually in this game the defense plays with a guy right next to the offensive player and the other a little farther behind ready to help or grab the rebound in case of a missed jumper. BTW, the guy that gets the board and/or steals the ball becomes the attacker and the other two the defenders.

Let me know how did it go if you try it this way.

    My best.
